Raising the profile of NWT artists

March 8, 2010

Yellowknife, NWT

The Northwest Territories enjoys a wealth of creativity and artists despite its relatively sparse population.

That wealth is an open secret North of Sixty, but Fort Smith musician Veronica Johnny wants the world to know. Along with husband and bandmate Dave Johnny, Veronica hosted a Press Kit and Bio workshop for artists in Yellowknife, March 6 and 7. The workshop, free for participants and sponsored by Folk on the Rocks, Aurora College and Dave Brosha Photography, was designed to help emerging artists with the basics of promotion and marketing, while giving established professionals a chance to rethink their press packages.

During the two-day session, artists networked, brainstormed and learned about a variety of topics including bio writing, information gathering to build a professional resume, industry tips and the pros and cons of traditional hard-copy versus electronic press kits. They also participated in a professional photo shoot.

“A press kit is essentially an artist’s resume and calling card, whether they’re looking to book gigs, land a festival spot, win an award or gain access to funding,” said Veronica. “This is something we’d like to do across the territory, and not just for musicians. It’d be good for other types of artists, as well as people teaching traditional skills and language.”

Workshop participants ranged from those seeking to establish themselves on the local scene, to others with national exposure and years of experience.

“I definitely feel more professional now,” said beginner singer/songwriter Catherine Gillis.

Well-known producer and musician Norm Glowach, back from playing to 22,000-person crowds at the Vancouver Olympics, also attended.

“It was an entertaining and thoughtful presentation on the serious business of artist promotion,” he said.

Veronica and Dave were surprised when they saw Glowach’s name on the sign-up sheet.

“To have a guy like Norm come out, who I’d say is quite a bit more accomplished than us, and leave having learned or gained something new to consider is humbling but gratifying,” said Dave. “We’ve had some great opportunities over the last couple of years, and it’s had a lot to do with how we present ourselves. We’re grateful to Folk on the Rocks for the opportunity to share what we’ve learned and help others.”

'Art in the Park' exhibit at Northern Images

In commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of Ivvavik National Park of Canada and the Inuvialuit Final Land Claim Agreement, Northern Images is proud to host Parks Canada's permanent collection and additional works inspired by the artists' experience in Ivvavik National Park: "Art in the Park".

Opening March 20th, 2010 in Inuvik, the 'Art in the Park' exhibit will subsequently travel to Northern Images, Yellowknife for April 30th, 2010. After that, it will open at Northern Images, Churchill on July 1st, 2010, in celebration of Canada Day. Featuring work from 24 artists, this exhibit includes pieces from artists from across Canada, around the world, and residing in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region: all participants in Parks Canada's 'Artists in the Park' program at Ivvavik. As part of their agreement with Parks Canada, each artist selects one piece to become part of the permanent collection; as well, the 'Art in the Park' exhibit includes other pieces from 'Artists in the Park' participants, derived from their time at Ivvavik.

Northern Images invites all who love art, and the north (and particularly, northern art) to join in our appreciation for the timeless wonder of our beautiful Arctic environment, and the incredible creativity of the artists it inspires.

Patrick Kane North: Photo Show

Hi all!

For 5 years, I¹ve been lucky and humbled enough to have travelled to some pretty cool places I never imagined I¹d see. More importantly, I¹ve met some incredible people who live amazing lives in the most remote part of theworld: The North.

On Saturday, March 6, I invite everyone to come see the people and places of Canada¹s Arctic. This collection of photography celebrates the diversity of people and ideals that span our three territories. Hopefully my photos take you North too; to hear the stories of the people who call it home.

Exhibit to take place at the Snowcastle, Saturday, March 6th from
noon-5pm.

*Viewer discretion: there will be some images of subsistence/commercial hunting that may be disturbing to younger children.

Our mission is to promote, encourage, support, showcase and produce independent film, video, audio and digital media with the social, cultural and artistic community of the Northwest Territories.

This festival is a wonderful opportunity for Yellowknifers to see the films that they would not normally get to find in movie theatres in the North. We have also brought up wonderful workshop teachers from all around the world – bringing knowledge of the industry to our little town.

IPY Youth Time Capsule Writing Contest – DEADLINE EXTENDED
** New deadline for entries: December 31st, 2009 **

The International Polar Year Youth Time Capsule Project Committee is holding a writing contest for Pan-Arctic youth, and is calling for submissions about life in the north that will be included in the IPY Time Capsule, to be re-opened 25 years from now.

The IPY Time Capsule Project is a youth-led initiative, aimed at
involving northern youth in the International Polar Year in
meaningful and creative ways. The Project has been developed based on the belief that youth participation is essential to ensuring the lasting legacy of the International Polar Year. So far, the Time Capsule Project has included photography, art work and youth surveys, and the Committee is now seeking pieces of writing, so that a written interpretation of life in the north through the eyes of youth can be presented along side the visual components of the Time Capsule.

Youth living in Canada between the ages of 12 and 18, who are
interested in submitting an entry to the writing contest, are asked to submit a one-page piece of writing, in any format (prose, poetry, etc), on a subject related to life in the North.

Entries will be accepted in any language that is currently spoken in the North, and prizes will be awarded to the first and second place entrants in each of two categories: English/French and Traditional Language/Other.

The First Prize winner in each category will receive an Ipod Touch
32 GB, and the Second Prize winner will receive an Ipod Nano 16GB.

The deadline for entries is December 31st, 2009.

All entries will be considered for inclusion in the IPY Time Capsule Project, and select entries will be displayed in a physical Time Capsule exhibit, slated for early 2010, as well as on an online exhibit, which will be available to the public beginning in late 2009 and displayed until January 2011.

In order to participate in the contest, youth can submit entries by email to ipy.timecapsule@gmail.com, or by mail to P.O.Box 11050, Yellowknife, NT, X1A 3X7, Attn. Bree Denning.

Bio and Press Kit Workshop - looking for participants and funding

Bio & Press KitWorkshop (For Artists / Musicians / Models / Actors /
Traditional Teachers)

An Artist’s press kit is their resume; a living document evolving along
with the artist’s career that must routinely be updated and improved.

We are pleased to offer a 2-day Bio & Press Kit Workshop giving
creative people the tools they need to establish and/or market
themselves to gain work and support. Whether they are an emerging
artist looking to go pro, or an established professional looking to
update, a current press kit is a valuable document, and essential when
applying for grants, awards, work, etc.

We are looking for organizations to fund and/or support this workshop,
to make it FREE TO PARTICIPANTS and accessible to youth, aboriginal
people and communities.

We are also looking for people to participate in this workshop in Fort
Smith, Hay River, Fort Simpson, Yellowknife and any other NWT town with
interest. Any assistance or support your organization can provide is
appreciated.

We hope to schedule these workshops prior to NWT Arts Council deadline
of February 28th, so participants can apply with an updated or brand
new press kit.

We are interested in delivering this workshop THIS MONTH during this
December break so we can offer it to students, returning post secondary
students and government employees on leave.

Potential workshop dates: Dec 23/24, Dec 26/27, Dec 28/29, Dec 30/31 or
Jan 2/3. We are also available in January & February.

This workshop, helping the territory’s next wave of creative
professionals and artisans gain work and exposure, has the added
benefit of raising awareness of career opportunities in the arts and,
long-term, contributes to a diversified economy.

Participants actively involved in the workshop can expect to leave with
a completed Bio & Press Kit, suitable for immediate use in multiple
media, including traditional print and newer electronic/online
applications.

Please see our attached press kit and the Bio & Press Kit Workshop
poster.

Ilook forward to hearing from you and working together to help our
community.

Program Descriptions....

Elder/Youth Legacy Program: Support for Aboriginal Artistic
Practices - Deadline: 15 November

Program Description
Since the Canada Council created the Aboriginal Peoples
Collaborative Exchange program, more people have been asking how to
obtain funds for two underserved segments of the Aboriginal arts
community: the Elders (senior artists) and the youth (ages 15-25).

The Canada Council has realized that Aboriginal Elders and youth—the two segments of the community involved in passing on art
practices—have not been regularly applying for arts funding. Many of the Elders (senior artists) found the paperwork cumbersome, and the youth of the communities were ineligible because of their age.

The Elder/Youth Legacy program solves this by offering program
funding to Aboriginal organizations that wish to work with these two groups on a project basis. This program is not limited to
traditional art forms—it encompasses all forms of the arts. ~First,
the organization will choose the Elder who will work with their
youth. That Elder will then help to decide the number of young
people he or she will work with, and will help to select them.

Program Objectives
Through this program, Aboriginal arts organization can help Elders
pass on the many art forms being practiced, to the next generation.
The program will also increase the Canada Council’s capacity to
serve Aboriginal Elders of this country, giving them opportunities
to work with youth and pass on their legacy of artistic practice.

National and International: TRAVEL Grants

There are no deadlines for Travel Grant requests, but you are
encouraged to apply a minimum of eight weeks in advance of your
departure date.
Program Description
The Aboriginal Peoples Collaborative Exchange program assists
Aboriginal artists (individuals) or artistic groups from Aboriginal
communities to travel to other Aboriginal communities to share
traditional and/or contemporary knowledge or practices that will
contribute to the development of their artistic practice. The
program fosters unique artistic relationships and networks through
these collaborative exchanges among Aboriginal artists across all
disciplines.
This program has two components: National and International Project
Grants, and National and International Travel Grants. (There are
separate guidelines and forms for the Travel Grants component.)
National project travel, which allows Aboriginal artists and
artistic groups to travel within Canada to collaborate with
prominent Aboriginal artists and artistic groups. This category also assists prominent Aboriginal artists or artistic groups to travel to an Aboriginal community in Canada to collaborate with Aboriginal artists and/or arts organizations.
International project travel, which allows Aboriginal artists and
artistic groups from Canada to travel to other countries to
collaborate with prominent or highly regarded Aboriginal artists and artistic groups, in response to an invitation. This category also supports projects to bring established Aboriginal artists and
artistic groups from other countries to Canada, to work with
Aboriginal artists and/or arts organizations.
Examples of Successful National Travel Grants
An emerging artist collaborated with a Cree elder to document the
traditional hide tanning process.
An established artist was invited to lead a birch bark basketry
workshop in Inuvik.
Examples of Successful International Travel Grants
A traditional dancer was invited to participate in an Indigenous
Arts Conference in New Zealand. An
Aboriginal mask maker from the Maritimes was invited to do a
two-week mentorship with a Native-American flute–master from
Massachusetts.
A maximum of $2,500 is available to applicants requesting Travel
Grants. (An exception is made for applicants traveling to or from
northern Canada: they can apply for a maximum of $3,000.)

National and International PROJECT Grants- Deadline: 15 November
Program Description
The Aboriginal Peoples Collaborative Exchange program assists
individual Aboriginal artists or Aboriginal arts groups, collectives and organizations to travel to other Aboriginal communities to share traditional or contemporary artistic practices that will contribute to the development of their own artistic practice. The program fosters unique artistic relationships and networks through these collaborative exchanges among Aboriginal artists across all disciplines.
Eligible Aboriginal Applicants
Canadian individual applicants, groups, collectives and
organizations are eligible to apply to this program. Foreign
indigenous artists must have a Canadian Aboriginal group, collective or organization apply on their behalf.

within Canada to collaborate with other prominent Aboriginal artists and artistic groups.
International project grants, which allow individual Aboriginal
artists or Aboriginal groups, collectives and organizations from
Canada to travel to other countries to collaborate with prominent or highly regarded indigenous artists and artistic groups, in response to an invitation. This category also supports projects to bring established indigenous artists and artistic groups from other
countries to Canada, to work with Canadian Aboriginal artists and/or arts organizations.

share their knowledge with a dance group from Ontario, and to give a public presentation of their works.

Great Canadian Song Quest update

VOTING HAS BEGUN FOR CBC RADIO 2’S GREAT CANADIAN SONG QUEST;
singer-songwriters and Shortlist of locations REVEALED

CBC Radio 2, Canada’s national music network,reveals a blockbuster
list of 65 Canadian singer-songwriters vying for the chance to
immortalize Canadians’ favourite places in song in the GREAT
CANADIAN SONG QUEST. It’s now up to Canadians to choose the artists
and pick the spots to be forever commemorated in Canada’s songbook.

Voters have until Friday, October 23 at 12 a.m. ET to choose from a
shortlist of the most popular places from each province and
territory, and the artists they’d like to see create the song for
those locations, by visiting www.cbc.ca/radio2. Once voting closes,
the final 13 artists have four weeks to compose and record an
original song, inspired by the most popular Canadian location from
their province or territory.

“We can’t wait to see the final list of locations and artists chosenby Canadians,” said Mark Steinmetz, director of music programming,CBC Radio. “By inspiring these artists with Canada’s special locales, we will create a distinctly Canadian playlist. This initiative is a great way for Canadians to share their collective passion for music and our country.”

The GREAT CANADIAN SONG QUEST’s artist line-up was selected from
Radio 2’s playlist, and includes musicians representing Canada’s
regions and celebrated sounds. From musical icons to emerging stars, Canadians will choose from a vast range of styles, from urban beatand home-grown folk to rich and nuanced world music. Artist bios and a selection of their work can be found at the Song Quest website through www.cbc.ca/radio2.
The location short list is a result of the nominations submitted by
Canadians over the past two weeks, through the GREAT CANADIAN SONG
QUEST website, campaign-style blogs, Tweets and Facebook comments,
and photo and video postings.

CBC's Great Canadian Song Quest - Support Your Community!

Hi!

Denise Donlon here.

I’m writing today to ask you to be a champion in your community for
brand new, original Canadian music.
We are all familiar with songs such as “New York, New York”, “I Love Paris” and “Galveston”... but what about songs dedicated to Canadian places? There are classics like “Bobcaygeon” by The Tragically Hip and “Running Back to Saskatoon” by The Guess Who. There are definitely more places in this country worth immortalizing in song…likely right in your own backyard!
That’s why CBC Radio 2 is launching the Great Canadian Song Quest –
to give Canadians a chance to nominate the locations that matter
most to them and commission 13 new songs to be written about those
places!
And not only will Canadians get to decide on one place from each
province, they will also get to vote on the 13 singer-songwriters
who will compose and record the new songs.
Please help us spread the word and get your community involved in

40 Canadian teens to be offered chance to write, videotape interviews and report on their experiences at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games

Sep 11, 2009

Vancouver, BC — Forty budding teenage journalists or videographers from across Canada will have the opportunity to cover history in the making at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games through a new program called Historica-Dominion at the Games.

To nab their spot at the Games, teens aged 16- to 18-years-old are invited to enter competitions — two national (one creative writing-based and one video-based) and/or a regional essay competition aimed at Vancouver students — describing why they should have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Competition submissions can be made at www.fyicanada.ca starting today.

The competitions are part of a collaborative project between the newly formed Historica-Dominion Institute, which is dedicated to creating greater knowledge and appreciation of Canadian history, identity and citizenship, and /EDU, the online Canadian school portal for the Games created by the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC).

“Engaging Canada’s next generation of young storytellers in the 2010 Winter Games and seeing and reading their unique perspectives on history unfolding before their eyes is the driving force behind our partnership with the Historica-Dominion Institute on this innovative project,” said Burke Taylor, VANOC’s vice president of culture, celebration and education programs.

“These Games are about creating lasting legacies for Canada and what better way to do that than to involve our youth, put them right in the centre of the action and provide them with a creative outlet to share their experiences with others?” he continued. “This will be something they will always look back on with pride and a sense of accomplishment.”

The 40 competition winners will attend sporting and cultural events, such as hockey, figure skating and nightly Victory Ceremonies, during either the first week of the Olympic Winter Games in February or the Paralympic Winter Games in March. Their tickets will be provided through VANOC’s previously publicized ticket program for those who might not have the means to attend Games events. After attending these events, they will record and write daily about their own personal experiences at the Games and will also have the chance to interview retired Olympian and Paralympian stars, artists and Games’ officials.

Their best video diaries and articles will be shared with the entire world — live from Vancouver and Whistler — at www.fyicanada.ca and www.vancouver2010.com/edu from February 10 to 17, 2010 and March 10 to 17, 2010.

“We’re pleased to partner with VANOC through the Historica-Dominion at the Games initiative,” said Avie Bennett, chairman of the Historica-Dominion Institute. “This partnership allows us to bring youth from across Canada together in Vancouver and Whistler to experience and chronicle history in the making at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. This is a remarkable opportunity for these young people to connect with each other, to learn about our country through each other and to experience Canada’s sporting present, while learning about its impressive past.”

Eight students from across Canada will be chosen, along with 26 from Metro Vancouver, as well as six students with disabilities, who will be selected through criteria set by 2010 Legacies Now, a British Columbia-based not-for-profit society that is partnering on the project. Competition winners will be announced in late October. Each of the competitions will be judged by a separate panel.

The 40 participants will be required to pay a registration fee of $625 to cover their meals, local transportation and other costs during their week at the Games. Some students will take part in a homestay program where students from other regions will stay with those located in Metro Vancouver. Students from areas outside British Columbia will have their transportation to the Games region provided by the federal Department of Canadian Heritage.

For more information on Historica-Dominion at the Games, visit www.fyicanada.ca and www.vancouver2010.com/edu. At /EDUteachers can also find Games-related resources related to school curricula andshare with the world the innovative projects happening in their classrooms on the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

CODE Screen 2010 brings Canadian art to your fingertips

CODE Screen 2010 brings Canadian art to your fingertips - More than
100 works of art showcased in a digital gallery available on screens
everywhere
Sep 1, 2009
Vancouver, BC—It is an art gallery without the tired feet. No walls
or parking, a zero intimidation factor and admission is totally
free. Called CODE Screen 2010, the aim of this series of online
exhibitions is to take a sample of Canada’s best and most
thought-provoking contemporary art out of the museum and onto
computer screens everywhere.
CODE Screen 2010 debuts today along with a unique feature that can
be downloaded to automatically receive a fresh exhibition every two
weeks counting down to the Games. It is the second of a series of
digital projects to be launched as part of CODE, the Cultural
Olympiad’s digital edition, at www.vancouver2010.com/code. Using the
web, CODE Screen 2010 is adding to the visual arts program that will
be showcased during the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad, presented
by Bell.
Over the last year, six professional curators have scanned the
entire contemporary Canadian art landscape to create 14 unique and
easily accessible exhibitions of sculpture, photography, 2-D, and
performance/installation art by a diverse range of artists across
the country. Each exhibition has been inspired by a work of art
created by a winner of the prestigious Governor General’s Awards in
Visual and Media Arts, handed out annually by the Canada Council for
the Arts.
“CODE Screen 2010 is a unique undertaking for Canadian art and it
extends the experience of the Cultural Olympiad directly to
Canadians and people around the world no matter where they are,”
said Burke Taylor, vice president, culture and celebrations for the
Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic
Winter Games (VANOC). “Through our partnership with the Canada
Council for the Arts on this project we’re able to share over 100
extraordinary works of art selected by some of the top curators in
the country.”
The first exhibition, released today, is inspired by the work Bees
Behaving on Blue by Governor General’s Award winner Michael Snow, an
internationally renowned artist best known for his influential work
in experimental films. Viewers can simply press play and watch as
the evocative images automatically appear on their screen or they
can go at their own pace and create their own experience, learning
more about the art by reading the explanations provided.
“The entire CODE project is all about using digital technology to
devise ways to connect, create and collaborate with audiences and
artistic communities,” explained Rae Hull, director of CODE. “CODE
Screen 2010 is Canadian art on your screen — how you connect with
it, where you see it and who you see it with is completely up to
you.”
New exhibitions will be released every two weeks and run through to
March 2010 during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter
Games. As a reminder, visitors to www.vancouver2010.com/code can
download an application to have CODE Screen 2010 one click away and
be alerted when these new exhibitions are posted.

YK 75 Arts Market - Attention All Artists

Hello talented artists of Yellowknife!!

Due to the construction at Civic Plaza, finding a venue to erect our art tent in support of Yellowknife's 75th Anniversary Celebrations has been a huge challenge.

Our tent will now be set up on June 23 and open for artists and user groups from Wed June 24 to Tues June 30.

For the weekend of June 27/28, our tent will be on the grassed lawn behind city hall. The art market will run as scheduled between 10 am to 6 pm.

The good news is the area is accessible to downtown traffic, easy to advertise, space will be offered free to artists and musicians (through Music NWT) and signage will direct traffic to the area. On Saturday June 27, YK75 will complement the art market with a food festival from 11 am to 3 pm in the parking lot beside city hall.

For anyone interested in participating, please contact:

Looking for flying stories

My name is Jude Weir and I'm a Northern Canada rookie. And by that
I mean I'm shamefully ignorant about it - which is a problem since
I'm looking for stories about flying in the NWT - historical and
present day.

We're building an online "story map" as a resource and archive of
personal flying stories. As this is a non-profit project we are searching out stories ourselves. So I'm really grateful for your
website and I will get to reading everything on it to get the
historical aspects but, in the meantime. I'm wondering if you might
be able to point me in the direction of people who might have a
story about flying more recently.

It doesn't need to be grand, or even very long. We're looking to
capture the "flavour" of the experience as much as sensational
stories (but we'll take those too!). It can be anyone's story --
pilot, crew, passenger...as long as it involves flying.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Deadline: January 31st 2009 and August 31st 2009

SOME PROGRAMS HAVE BEEN IMPROVED FOR 2009.

Located in the La Filature building - a former magnificently renovated industrial textile mill - DAÏMÔN offers creation, production and dissemination resources in the areas of media arts and photography.

By way of its programs Artiste résident, (resident artist), Recherche et création, (research and development), Photographie et impression numérique (photography and digital printing) and Soutien aux premières œuvres, (support for first works), DAÏMÕN encourages artists to push the limits of their practice and to develop new approaches with image, video, as well as sound and electronic art, including installation, interactive and performative practices.
DAÏMÕN privileges projects emphasising the increasingly complex interrelations between media and those that push the limits of intermedia rather than simply addressing the vocabulary of the chosen media. Only projects involving a degree of research will be considered.

With its STUDIÕ, production and exhibition spaces, DAÏMÕN encourages the materialization and installation of, and experimentation with, works of significant scale as well as the development of transversal practices. Public and informal meetings are regularly organized in order to allow the local community to familiarize itself with the work of artists in residence. This multipurpose STUDIÕ is available to artists for the experimentation, production and presentation of work requiring a specific technical infrastructure.

DAÏMÕN provides artists with access to image and sound recording equipment and digital audio and video editing suites. A darkroom enables large-scale (1m 32) silver emulsion development from negatives of up to 280 mm. A digital printing service (EPSON Stylus 9600 Pro) is also available.

CREATION PROGRAMS
Artist Residency
Research and Creation
Support for First Works
Photography and Digital Imaging

Artist Residency
Offered to professional artists outside the Ottawa-Gatineau region, this program aims to promote fruitful exchange between artists from here and elsewhere. Established, mid-career artists with at least five years of active and significant practice are invited to apply.

For each of the projects the centre provides a residency of 4 to 6 weeks including accommodation, access to the Centre’s equipment, and the services of a technician (60 hours). An artist’s fee of $1500 is provided. DAÏMÕN is also able to provide a travel allowance and cover limited daily expenses. All other production costs are the responsibility of the artist. DAÏMÕN organizes a public evening artist’s talk, in which the artist presents their past and present work.

Research and Creation
Open to professional emerging, mid-career or established artists.
DAÏMÕN selects six artists annually, three from the Ottawa-Gatineau region and three from elsewhere. The Centre encourages applications from artists from non-central Francophone communities.

DAÏMÕN provides each artist with technical and artistic support, access to the Centre’s equipment for four (4) weeks and the services of a technician (50 hours). DAÏMÕN is also able to provide a travel allowance and cover limited daily expenses for artists from outside the region. All other production costs are the responsibility of the artist.

Photography and Digital Imaging
This program aims to improve the support offered to artists working on paper using darkroom or digital imaging techniques.

DAÏMÕN provides each artist with technical and artistic support, access to the Centre’s equipment for three (3) weeks and the services of a technician (15 hours). DAÏMÕN is also able to provide a travel allowance and cover limited daily expenses for artists from outside the region. All other production costs are the responsibility of the artist. Artists using darkroom facilities must provide their own development chemicals and photographic paper.

Support for First Works
DAÏMÕN continues its support for the production of a first work for three artists from the Ottawa-Gatineau region. Admissible projects include the production of an original work using video or the application of hybrid media in artwork.

Young artists from the Ottawa-Gatineau region with basic training are invited to apply to create a first work in photo, video or new media in a professional context. Professional artists from the Ottawa-Gatineau region with an established practice in another discipline (painting, sculpture, photography, installation, etc.) who wish to develop a production in video or new media are also encouraged to apply.

DAÏMÕN provides each artist with technical and artistic support, access to the Centre’s equipment for three (3) weeks and the services of a technician (30 hours). All other production costs are the responsibility of the artist.

HOW TO APPLY
Artists are encouraged to consult the specific conditions of the program that interests them. In every case, applications should clearly state the program choice and include:
- Summary of project (5 lines)
- Artist’s statement (max 1/2 page)
- Clear and concise project description (max 1 page)
- Technical specifications and Timeline (max 1 page)
- Resume (max 3 pages)
- Supporting documentation* with descriptive list
- Self-addressed stamped envelope

* The support materiel must reference one's artistic practice and not be limited to the proposed project. Supporting documentation may include a maximum of 10 images (digital documents, slides or photographs), 1 VHS, 1 CD, 1 DVD (max 5 min.), 1 URL or 1 publication.

For candidates to Artist Residencies program, a maximum of 20 images (digital documents, slides or photographs), 1 VHS, 1 CD, 1 DVD (max 10 min.), 1 URL or 1 publication.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Theatre on the Lake One-Act Play Festival

Hello everyone,

After the fun and success of last year's Theatre on the Lake in
Yellowknife, we have decided to bring it back for another year. Only
this time we're opening it up as a one-act play festival, and we're
currently looking for submissions!

Whether you're a writer, director, actor, or comedy troupe, we're
looking for proposals for one-act plays (40 minutes or less) for the
festival in late July. Once again we will be building a stage on Frame
Lake, by the stairs at the museum. Last year we had three plays and
over 350 people in attendance for the three lunch-hour and two evening
shows. This year we want to open it up to anyone interested in putting
a one-act play... You provide the show, we provide the venue! Even if
you're not in Yellowknife, if you have a play that you've written that
you'd like to submit, we'd love to hear from you!

We'll also be holding auditions in mid to late May for actors, and of
course we will need crew as well. So if you're interested in getting
involved, or would like to submit a proposal for a production, we'd
love to hear from you! Just send us an email at
theatreonthelake@gmail.com.

Attached is the poster that you'll soon see around town (if you live in
Yellowknife), along with the application form and additional
information for anyone interested in submitting a proposal. The
deadline for submissions is Wednesday, May 13th.

All ages are invited to participate and submit proposals.

Please feel free to pass this on to anyone you know who might be
interested in getting involved! Hope to see you all out on Frame Lake
this summer!

Sincerely,
Tennille Read & Chris Gamble
Festival Co-Producers

Overview of the GNWT Approach at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games

INUVIK (April 02, 2009) – The signing of an agreement between the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) will allow the GNWT to actively promote the people, artists, performers and tourism destinations of the Northwest Territories (NWT) to an international audience at a world-class event. Details of the GNWT’s planned investment in promoting the North at the Olympic Winter Games were released today.

GNWT objectives for participation at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games include:

• highlighting the culture, landscape, and natural history unique to the Northwest Territories; • promoting the development of youth leaders and cultural and community pride; and • promoting the NWT as a desirable destination to live, work, and play.

The planned activities provide an overview of specific elements of the GNWT participation at the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. They can be viewed at http://www.exec.gov.nt.ca/currentnews/prDetails.asp?varPR_ID=1249
“The Olympic Winter Games will bring spectators from around the world to Canada,” said Premier Floyd Roland. “This is a rare opportunity for us to promote the NWT and what it has to offer to a national and international audience that can often be beyond our reach. Taking advantage of this opportunity to promote our culture, heritage and unique tourism destinations and provide experiences for our youth is part of the GNWT’s plan to build our future and maximize our opportunities.”

"The appeal of Canada’s northern culture is well recognized around the globe,” said the Honourable Jackson Lafferty, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment. “Our support for NWT artists and performers will not only showcase our culture and heritage, but will help to make these truly Canada’s Games."

The highlight of territorial involvement will be Northwest Territories Day on February 19, 2010. NWT Day will provide numerous opportunities to showcase territorial artists and performers, demonstrate traditional Dene and Inuit games and promote the people and opportunities of the Northwest Territories. The three northern territories are working together to promote Canada’s North, showcase Canada’s northern culture and history, and provide opportunities for northerners to take part in the Games.

The GNWT participation at the 2010 Games will be supported by youth ambassadors selected from communities across the Northwest Territories. Activities are planned for these youth and in territorial communities that will have a lasting positive effect. “We want to get our communities and in particular our youth involved in the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games,” said the Honourable Robert C. McLeod, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs. “We want to promote the Olympic ideal and the health and social benefits of participation in sport in all our communities.”

A pan-territorial marketing campaign is being planned to coordinate with the 2010 Games to promote interest and investment in Canada’s North. Plans for a jointly sponsored Northern pavilion are also being developed with the Yukon and Nunavut. This “Northern House” will provide a focal point for Northern and NWT participation at the Games, a retail location for northern artists, and a venue to promote territorial business and investment opportunities.

“Our approach to marketing and promoting our territory at the 2010 Games reflects our pride in the Northwest Territories,” said the Honourable Bob McLeod, Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment. “We want to show to the rest of Canada that the Northwest Territories is a great place to visit, live and work.”

More information on each of the elements of territorial participation at the Games will be developed in the coming months.

Casting call: 4,500 performers sought for Olympic ceremonies

Tuesday, March 3, 2009 CBC News

Olympic organizers in Vancouver are looking for 4,500 dancers and performers and athletes to volunteer in the televised performances for the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games next February.

"We're looking for people with all types of performance skills and levels of ability who want to play a part in sharing Canada with the world," said David Guscott, the executive vice-president of celebrations and partnerships with the 2010 Olympic organizing committee, known as VANOC.

The ceremonies inside BC Place will be broadcast around the world and are intended to tell the story of Canada to an estimated television audience of 3.5 billion.

"Previous experience isn't a requirement, but taking quick action is. This is the one and only call for participation," he said.

VANOC is also looking for about 1,000 volunteers to help backstage at the ceremonies. Applications can be filed online at the VANOC website.

All performers must be 17 or older by May 1, 2009 to apply, although possible opportunities for performers younger than this are still being considered.

"Above all, we're looking for volunteers with lots of personality, a positive attitude, tons of energy, and a willingness to perform on a stage in front of thousands of people live and billions more around the globe."

Auditions will start in May and candidates will be notified this summer if they have been successful. Rehearsals will begin in November and continue until the Feb. 12 opening of the Games, including over the December holiday period.

Rehearsals will be held twice a week and each volunteer performer will rehearse for more than 100 hours to prepare for their role.

It will be the first time in Olympics history that the ceremonies will be staged at an indoor venue.

They are being produced by Australian David Atkins, who also produced the ceremonies for the Summer Games in Sydney in 2000.

The federal government is spending the $20 million to cover the majority of the cost.

Yellowknife Produced Film Screened in Montral and Ottawa screenings of documentary

Please note that One river, Two shores: Reflections on the Mackenzie Gas Project by Yellowknife film director France Benoit will be screened at the following locations in southern Canada in February:
OTTAWA: NEW TIMES !!! En franais and in English. February 19th, Alumni Theatre, University Centre, University of Ottawa. This is a Sierra Club event which includes a film festival with a number of films on the tar sands and a panel discussion with Stephen Hazell, Tony Clarke and France Benoit. The film is now shown in French at 17:30 h. and 20:40 h. in English with a Q & A after each screening.
For the whole list of films you can go to : http://www.sierraclub.ca/climatecrisis/?page_id=1130 MONTRAL: En franais. At the film festival Rendez-vous du cinma qubcois, February 20th at 7:30 pm at Cinma ONF. Q & A will follow the screening. For tickets go to www.admission.com. ***
A natural gas pipeline project is currently under review in the Northwest Territories in Canada's North. The proposed route for this mega-project would largely follow the Mackenzie River and most likely change the landscape and the people of the region forever.
Because of its sheer size, this is the first project which would affect much more than the social fabric of the people who have lived there for thousands of years. It puts at risk the link between a people and the land , the source of their culture and spirituality, its essence. Never has it been this threatened before.
The film director, France Benoit, committed to take the time to reflect collectively on this mega-project, before it was built. In the spring of 2007, she undertook two journeys, an inner personal journey and another one which took her along the route of the future gas pipeline. She wanted to hear the voices of people who have lived along the river for thousands of years, people she'd so often heard of. Just as a river has two shores, France knew there would be some people who would be mainly in favour of the project, others who would be mainly against it.
The film unravels over the course of the four seasons and follows four main characters, most of them aboriginal people from the region: Margaret Vandell from Fort Providence (Spring), Alestine Andr from Tsiigehtchic (Summer), Jerry Antoine from Fort Simpson (Fall) and Bob Bromley from Yellowknife (Winter). The film crew also went to Calgary, Inuvik and Wha Ti.

The Canada Council Art Bank announces purchase of artworks

Ottawa, December 1, 2008 – The Canada Council Art Bank today launched a request for submissions of artworks by Canadian artists of African, Asian, Middle Eastern, Latin American or mixed racial heritage to enhance its collection of original contemporary Canadian art.

The primary objectives of this purchase are to increase the awareness of culturally diverse artists about the programs offered by the Canada Council; complement the Art Bank’s collection; and respond to the increasing cultural diversity of Canada’s population. This initiative, developed in collaboration with Council’s Equity Office, is in alignment with the Canada Council’s strategic plan directions in support of individual artists and equity.

Director Victoria Henry said, “The Art Bank is looking to purchase paintings, photographs, sculptures, prints, drawings, fine craft and mixed media made by Canadian artists from culturally diverse communities. We want to showcase beautiful artworks that reflect the demographic make up of Canada. Our clients are very often looking to rent works created by culturally diverse artists so we hope that many artists will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.”

A peer assessment committee will assess the submissions and select a number of them for purchase within the budget of $225,000. The process for submitting work to the Art Bank’s purchase of works by Canadian artists from culturally diverse communities program is available on the Art Bank’s website at www.artbank.ca. The completed submissions must be postmarked on or before 16 February 2009.

Canada Council Art Bank
The Art Bank, which has the largest collection of contemporary Canadian art in the world, was created in 1972 to support the efforts of Canadian visual artists and to provide public sector institutions with the opportunity to rent Canadian art for their offices and public spaces. The Art Bank includes some 18,000 artworks, and currently has close to 7,000 works rented to more than 200 government and corporate clients.
