YELLOWKNIFE FILM PREMIERE

One River, Two Shores: Reflections on the Mackenzie Gas Project

January 17, NACC

14:00 h. English
16:30 h. in French
19:30 h. Official premiere in English

Free admission

Les Productions Rivard from Winnipeg is proud to announce the premiere of One River, Two Shores: Reflections on the Mackenzie Gas Project, a film by local film director France Benoit. The premiere will take place at the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre on Saturday, January 17th at 7:30 pm with the presence of some of the characters in the film. The 52-minute film was researched, written and directed by France Benoit. The film is her second production and will be broadcast in French on Radio-Canada and RDI in 2009.
The films describes the natural gas pipeline project currently under review in the Northwest Territories. The proposed route for this mega-project would largely follow the Mackenzie River and most likely change the landscape and the people of the region forever. Because of its sheer size, this is the first project which would affect much more than the social fabric of the people who have lived there for thousands of years. It puts at risk the link between a people and « the land », the source of their culture and spirituality, its essence. Never has it been this threatened before.
France Benoit committed to take the time to reflect collectively on this mega-project, before it was built. In the spring of 2007, she undertook two journeys, an inner personal journey and another one which took her along the route of the future gas pipeline. She wanted to hear the voices of people who have lived along the river for thousands of years, people she'd so often heard of. Just as a river has two shores, France knew there would be some people who would be mainly in favour of the project, others who would be mainly against it.
The film unravels over the course of the four seasons and follows four main characters: Margaret Vandell from Fort Providence (spring), Alestine André from Tsiigehtchic (summer), Jerry Antoine from Fort Simpson (fall), and Bob Bromley from Yellowknife (winter). The film crew also went to Calgary, Inuvik and Wha Ti.
For more information, you may contact France Benoit at
(867) 873-1101 or Micheline Arbez at Les Productions Rivard at (204) 2330-0694.

Copies of the DVD will be on sale at the premiere, in both French and English.

Northern Arts and Cultural Centre~Senior Scene Study Workshop

The Northern Arts and Cultural Centre presents a Senior Scene Study
Workshop for experienced community actors directed by Alex
Czarnecki.

Scene Study is a rare opportunity to flex your acting muscles and
refine your craft in a professional supportive environment. Through
working on selected scenes of various genres, the actors discover
their strengths and weaknesses with the help of a trained director’s
eye. Problems within a scene often stem from a problem in basic
technique. Scene study allows actors an opportunity to improve their
craft while gaining performance experience. The process is always
looking to bring the actor to an instinctive, impulsive place where
emotional life is organic and the choices made by the actor are
exciting and truthful.

The Senior Scene Study Workshop will be registering and partnering
participants with a specific scene that they will work on throughout
the workshop week. Participants are expected to be prepared for each
and every session with a minimum of 2 hours of rehearsal with your
partner outside of the scheduled sessions. The success of the class
depends upon the commitment of each participant. The number of
participants is limited to ensure personalized attention and plenty
of stage time.

The sessions will take place during the evenings on the NACC stage.
The stage will be open for partner rehearsals throughout the day.

Scene Study Director:

Alex Czarnecki has worked in the fields of Theatre, Film and
Television as a creator, producer, actor, mentor and director. He
has worked as Associate Artistic Director and Faculty Advisor with
Michael Bawtree (Stratford Festival) at the internationally
acclaimed Banff Centre School of Fine Arts, Music Theatre and was
the first Executive/Artistic Director of the Northern Arts &
Cultural Centre. Alex has produced and directed over 40 works for
the theatrical stage. Equally at home with serious vehicles and the
pleasures of entertainment, his production credits encompass
compelling dramas like A Streetcar Named Desire, The Royal Hunt of
the Sun and Macbeth, buoyant musicals like Man of La Mancha, Fiddler
on the Roof and Oliver!, and engaging comedies like I Remember Mama,
Waltz of the Toreadors and Last of the Red Lovers, not to mention a
dash of who-dunnitry afforded by The Mousetrap. From 1990-1992, he
resumed the responsibilities and powers of Artistic Director, this
time for the NACC Studio Theatre Ensemble and Yellowknife’s Raven
Theatre. In 1986 produced and directed the Canadian premiere of
Matonabbee, which garnered meritorious reviews in the regional press
and was invited to tour nationally.

Ottawa, December 1, 2008 – The Canada Council Art Bank today launched a request for submissions of artworks by Canadian artists of African, Asian, Middle Eastern, Latin American or mixed racial heritage to enhance its collection of original contemporary Canadian art.

The primary objectives of this purchase are to increase the awareness of culturally diverse artists about the programs offered by the Canada Council; complement the Art Bank’s collection; and respond to the increasing cultural diversity of Canada’s population. We want to showcase beautiful artworks that reflect the demographic make up of Canada. Our clients are very often looking to rent works created by culturally diverse artists so we hope that many artists will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.”

A peer assessment committee will assess the submissions and select a number of them for purchase within the budget of $225,000. Celebrating the Season ...

The Bearclaw Gallery would like to invite you to join us November 29 from 1 - 4PM for the opening reception of our four person exhibition featuring new works by Alex Janvier,Jane Ash Poitras,Aaron Paquette and Northwest Territories artist, John Rombough.

The exhibition continues through to December 13, 2008.

Chipewayan Dene artist John Rombough was born in the remote community of Sioux Lookout in Northern Ontario, Canada. At the age
of three, John was adopted by Carol and Lyall Rombough, a Prince Edward Island couple. He attributes his early interest in drawing
and painting to being raised in their giving and artistic environment.

As a young adult John began the search for his birth parents. He discovered his biological father, Alfred Catholique, living in the
tiny community of Lutselk’e on the shores of Great Slave Lake in Canada’s pristine Northwest Territories. Warmly welcomed by all the
Catholique family, John decided to move to the community in order to rediscover his cultural identity.
John Rombough’s painting style has since changed to reflect the harmony of the Dene peoples and the natural world. His distinctive
modern aboriginal designs also encompass his own personal visions and strong connection with nature. New cultural discoveries continue to provide him with an inexhaustible reservoir of ideas to put to canvas. John’s paintings are increasingly well received by collectors and corporations alike.

Call for Proposals - Gateway Fund - Canadian Heritage

Canadian Culture Online (CCO) is launching a new call for proposals under the Gateway Fund for the 2009-10 fiscal year.

The primary objectives of the Gateway Fund are:
- to increase the amount of quality Canadian cultural content for the Internet,
- build audiences for that content by making it easy to find on the Internet, and
- engage Canadians to use the content and share their perspectives on Canadian events, people and values.

This call for proposals seeks to support projects by ethnocultural communities and Aboriginal peoples. Projects will result in cultural content for the Internet by and about these communities. Priority will be given to applicants whose projects have not previously received financial support from the Gateway Fund.

Note: The funding cycle of the Gateway Fund will expire on March 31, 2010. To be eligible for funding in the current round, the application must reflect a project that will be entirely completed by this date. The project website must be online, functional and publicly available by March 31, 2010. Any requests to extend the end date beyond March 31, 2010 will not be granted. Expenses incurred after March 31, 2010 are ineligible and will not be reimbursed.

The 2009-10 Gateway Fund Program and Application Guide is available on our website at: http://www.pch.gc.ca/pcce-ccop/progs/gateway_e.cfm.

I would greatly appreciate your help in ensuring that the groups targeted - ethnocultural communities and Aboriginal peoples - are informed of this initiative. Please note that the application deadline is Wednesday, November 26, 2008. If you require additional information, please contact our office at:
1 866 900-0001 (toll-free), (819) 953-4817 or by email at:

Sheila Hodgkinson Exhibit at Northern Heritage Centre

"Winter in the Boreal Forest - Dog Walking Notes "

June 15 to December 2008

Paintings by Sheila Hodgkinson from 35 years of observation and drawing in the boreal forest of the Northwest Territories are on display until December 2008 at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre in Yellowknife.
The Yellowknife painter is showcasing 30 works in acrylic and oil, many of which are inspired by long walks shared with her husky-shepherd cross, Bailey. For years the pair have made daily journeys through the woods that surround the legislature, Niven Lake and Back Bay.
"I've taken this area as a kind of microcosm which would represent the whole," she said. "It doesn't, obviously, because the boreal forest changes as it incorporates maple trees and more spruce and all sorts of things (in the south). But, in general, around here is enough to work on."

Please call 867-873-7551 for more information.

CCA - Survey on federal cuts

Over the past two weeks, the arts and culture sector has learned almost daily that certain cultural programs have been cut or completely cancelled. What started initially as the cancellation of two programs dedicated to the promotion of Canadian arts and culture abroad has became a broader movement which now adds up to a loss of more than $ 46 millions in support of the arts and culture community. In order to assess as best as possible the impact of these cuts, the CCA has first prepared a comprehensive and confirmed list of the programs currently know to have been affected. You will find, enclosed, the latest version of this list, but as the situation is evolving every day, we are encouraging to keep an eye on our website for an updated list: www.ccarts.ca. In collaboration with its partners, the CCA has put together a short survey for all arts and culture organizations in Canada. The purpose of this short survey is to identify the impacts that those cuts will have on the arts and culture organizations across the country. Please take few moments to carefully review the list of cuts and then respond to the survey. Your participation in this exercise will be of great help for demonstrating the real importance of those programs.
Please circulate this email to all interested parties.
Please send your answers to Guillaume Sirois, Cultural Policy Advisor at the Canadian Conference of the Arts, guillaume.sirois@ccarts.ca, fax. 613-238-4849, tel. 613-238-3561, ext. 19

Yellowknife Association for Community Living

As part of 50th anniversary celebrations for the Canadian
Association for Community Living (CACL), the Yellowknife Association
for Community Living is participating in an arts installation
project.

“The Encampment” and consists of a large-scale art installation
that incorporates 19th century expeditionary tents erected in
Ottawa. Thorn Sokoloski and Jenny McCowan of Studio SM are the
consultants for the installation. You can find out more about the
project at www.TheEncampment.net.
Our Association is looking for a “creative collaborator” who would
be involved in the design and construction of the installation to be
housed within the tent from the NWT.

The creative collaborator would need to be able to attend a workshop
in Winnipeg September 5 – 7, 2008. At this workshop, they would
complete the creative process and determine the installation for the
tent.

The Association is looking for funds to cover the expenses
associated with this workshop and we would not expect the creative
collaborator to cover their own expenses.

There is no remuneration for this position.

Great Northern Arts Festival Announces New Title Sponsorship

Inuvik, NT, June 19, 2008: The Great Northern Arts Festival in Inuvik, NWT, is pleased to announce a formal title sponsorship agreement for the Festival over the next three years with the Inuvialuit Development Corporation and NorTerra Inc. The Festival, now celebrating its 20th year, is Canada’s largest northern aboriginal arts festival, and focuses year-round on the training, professional development, presentation and cultural exchange of multi-disciplinary northern artists from across all three territories and the circumpolar world. This year’s festival, to be held July 11-20, will feature over 100 artists and offer 40 workshops for members of the public, along with nightly traditional northern entertainment, a headline concert with Inuit performer Lucie Idlout, an Arctic fashion show and a number of planned activities for youth and families.

Executive Director Tony Devlin says ‘this agreement gives us long-term resources and allows us to properly plan the direction and growth of the Festival over the next few years. Corporate and community commitment to events and year-round activities is key to the long-term sustainability of festivals across Canada. We are excited to be able to work with key regionally-based national corporations such as IDC and NorTerra and look forward to taking arts in the North to the next level’.

The celebrations this year coincide with the Town of Inuvik’s 50th Anniversary celebrations and the dual festivities promise plenty to do for visitors to the Mackenzie Delta during ‘Homecoming Week’. The Festival has re-designed the Midnight Sun Recreation Complex venue, tripling the gallery and display space, and is looking forward to presenting a number of special exhibits this year including a commissioned series of fifteen masks dedicated to elders from around the North who have made a contribution to traditional arts throughout the history of the Festival – called The Faces of the Elders – by Whitehorse artist Harreson Tanner. Online registration for the record number of arts workshops for the public has begun with more information available on the Festival, schedule of events and offered workshops at www.gnaf.org or by calling 867-777-8638.

YK BUSKER FESTIVAL & YK FRINGE FEST SUMMER 2009

Q: What do Indio Saravanja, The Bare Naked Ladies, Bob Hope, Violent Femmes, Penn & Teller, Robin Williams and Jian Ghomeshi have in common?

A: They busked!

Proposal for a community brainstorm…

WHAT?
Municipally-sanctioned busking stations in downtown Yellowknife, Old Town and near the Museum/Visitor’s Centre in SUMMER 2009.

WHY?
a) To provide a venue for local and visiting street performers and musicians to perform for donations (with municipal permission for musicians to sell copies of their own CD’s, as buskers in Vancouver are legally allowed to do)
b) To provide tourists with some entertaining rest stops during their walkabouts in our town
c) To assist with the current revitalization of the downtown core and Old Town
d) To help augment and/or revitalize existing festivals (Caribou Carnival, Old Town Ramble & Ride, Solstice Festival etc…)
e) For fun!

Buskers in Yellowknife could be more than entertainers… They could help inform tourists of coming events and special attractions and improve the spirit and atmosphere of the downtown core (thus making Yellowknife more safe and friendly). It’s also a great way for visiting musicians or performing artists to meet one another.

WHAT ELSE?
A non-profit, grassroots fringe festival in summer 2009 featuring outdoor theatre, busking, “theatre in the park” and other events combined with indoor events around town.

WHAT DO WE NEED TO ACCOMPLISH THIS?
A creative team of brains willing to…
a) Dig the idea, believe in it and contribute ideas to it…
b) Liase with city officials, performing arts organizations (NACC, RAANT etc.), local businesses, festival organizers and other stakeholders
c) Research busking policies in other cities
d) Help promote the idea well in advance of summer 2009 to give visiting performers and tourists the opportunity to share in the experience. This can be accomplished by being sufficiently organized and committed by Dec. 2008 so that a notice can appear in all the local visitors’ guides and busker/fringe festival schedules
e) Help educate Yellowknife residents about street performer audience etiquette

If you would like to share ideas, concerns, time and/or energy on this endeavour over the next year --- I would, too! Please get in touch… No rush. None of this organizing needs to be overwhelming or too much work for any individual – just a couple of hours each a month. None of this has to cost any significant amount of money, either. If the community takes pleasure in the notion, the rest will take care of itself. And it is a really nice notion!

Thanks for your consideration,

CARFAC National / Visual Arts Alliance Applauds Motion for Artists' Tax Exemption

Visual Arts Alliance Applauds Motion for Artists' Tax Exemption OTTAWA — A parliamentary motion to exempt artists from paying taxes on their first $50,000 of income is being applauded by visual artists and institutions across Canada.

The motion—M431—was introduced by Winnipeg MP Pat Martin (NDP) on January 24 and reads as follows: "That, in the opinion of the House, the government should: (a) recognize and acknowledge that artists contribute greatly to the social, cultural and economic well-being of Canada; (b) take note that, in other countries such as Ireland, incomeearned by artists, writers, performers and creators of art is exempt from income tax; and (c) give consideration to exempting up to $50,000of annual income earned by artists, writers, creators, and performers who work in Canada's cultural industries."

"How many Oscar-winning actors and award-winning painters are languishing and not realizing their full potential for lack of resources?" says Mr. Martin. "We need new economic engines and the arts and culture are legitimate means of economic development."

Tax relief for artists isn't new. In 1995, Quebec introduced an exemption on an artist's first $15,000 in copyright royalties, when their total income is under $30,000. Since then, artist associations have been lobbying to bring this exemption to the federal level.

"The income of many artists is already marginal. Mr. Martin's motion would greatly assist them in improving their livelihood, professional practices and the creative economy as a whole," says Gerald Beaulieu, National President of the Canadian Artists' Representation/Le Front des artistes canadiens (CARFAC).

Artists in Ireland have enjoyed tax exemption for 36 years, resulting in highly successful artists internationally and increased public appreciation for the arts. In 2002 the amount of tax theoretically forgone to the Irish state because of the exemption was €24 million. The projected cost to the Canadian tax base is currently being calculated.

Comprised of eleven national visual arts associations, the Visual Arts Alliance is committed to advancing the status of visual artists and institutions in Canada.
